Self Care

You can temporarily relieve the mild pain, swelling and inflammation of most hemorrhoidal flare-ups with the following self-care measures:

  • Use topical treatments.Try using over the counter ointment and or creams.
  • Keep the anal area clean. Bathe or shower the skin around your anus. Dry the area by blotting with a towel or using a warm hair dryer for a short amount of time. Be careful not to burn yourself.
  • Soak regularly in a warm bath. Do this several times daily.
  • Apply cold. Apply ice packs on the anus to relieve swelling.
  • Don't use dry toilet paper. Toilet paper can be abrasive. Instead try taking a warm shower or bath. You may even consider using a bidet.
  • Take oral medications. Try taking aspirin or Tylenol to help relieve some of the pain.

If pain persists after a few days you should see a doctor. If there is any bleeding you should see your doctor immediatley as this can be a sign of a more serious condition or disease.
