- Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day. Fruit juices are another good choice. Try to avoid drinking too much coffee or alcohol.
- Avoid laxatives and try taking bran as a stool softener.
- Exercise regularly

- Do not hold the need to defecate.
- Do not hold your breat while defecating.
- Don not sit on the toilet for extended periods of time.
- Avoid sitting for long periods of time. Try to get up and stretch as often as possible.
- If pregnant, try lying on your side as this can relieve pressure.
